Multiday ski expedition on Nordkalotleden – our longest winter expedition
Adventure by Design multiday ski expedition in northern Norway and Lapland is a unique adventure for fit adventurers. The expedition duration is 12 days in total – that is 10 days ski expedition plus the prep day and departure day.
Käsivarsi Wilderness Area and Finnmarksvidda are remote and wild. If you have no prior ski expedition experience, you must have other multiday trekking experience.
We designed our multiday ski expedition for the more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Highlights of this tour are:
- 10-day ski expedition at one of the last wilderness areas of Europe
- Open snow covered plains and mountains
- Ski expedition equipment included
- Suitable for fit outdoor enthusiasts
- Stay in tents and wilderness huts
- Small groups 2-8 people
- Book a private tour – minimum 2 people, maximum 12 people.
The ski expedition begins from Kautokeino, Norway and follows the famous Nordkalottleden multiday trekking route. The ski expedition goes through the Finnmarksvidda plains, the breathtaking Reisa valley and Reisa National Park and finally the Käsivarsin wilderness area in Finland. Along the way, we have some nights in wilderness cabins where we can maintain our gear, but most nights accommodation is in tents.
We do not ski on the Nordkalottleden, but find our own ways, following the snow and weather conditions. In spring time, it is usual to see locals ice fishing on the remote lakes and reindeer herds moving towards their breeding paddocks. On some days we might be closer to the popular trails, and see other skiers and snowmobilers on the Nordkalottleden, but mostly we are on our own. Two pre-expedition online sessions with the participants to talk about personal preparation and tour plan will be held in spring 2020.
On the multiday ski expedition we go to remote locations where there is no internet connection, electricity or running water. You have a great opportunity to enhance the daily life through learning new skills and maybe accomplishing a long time dream.
As in all Adventure by Design tours, the aim is to enjoy the nature and outdoors, not push yourself to your physical limits. Our speed is moderate, we take breaks regularly and have time to take photos or just enjoy the arctic landscapes. The 10-day tour has one day for either rest, do a day trip from the base camp or just chill and wait for the bad weather to pass.
Our lead guides are experienced professional outdoor instructors, who live in the area. All guides working with us are skilled and trained both in the arctic conditions and your safety. The 10-day tour is led by Gareth Hutton, the owner of Adventure by Design.
If you are not sure about the suitability of this skiing tour for you, check our other options, or send us a message, and we’ll think together the best tour for you.
Beginners ski expedition to three countries
On this 5-day wilderness ski expedition we ski in wilderness areas in Norway, Sweden and Finland. High mountains frame the landscape, and the ski tour follows natural routes in valleys and riverbanks. The terrain, speed and daily distances are suitable for outdoor people who have no previous experience of skiing. We stay the nights in comfortable wilderness huts. Details coming soon!
If you have some experience of skiing and winter outdoors, you might rather join us on the ski expedition to the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area. This remote, open landscape allows us to make our own trails according the weather and snow conditions. We camp in tents for more freedom. When conditions are good, we ski to Halti, the highest peak of Finland at the border of Norway.
