Arctic wilderness ski expedition

Adventure by Design wilderness ski expedition at the borderland of Finland and Norway is a challenge for both mind and body. Skiing through the open tundra, melting drinking water from snow and camping in expedition tents are just some cool elements of this arctic experience.

Our wilderness ski expedition is suited for the more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Highlights of this tour are:

  • Ski expedition at one of the last wilderness areas of Europe
  • Silence, remoteness and space
  • Ski gear included
  • Suitable for fit outdoor enthusiasts
  • Stay in tents
  • Small group 2-6 people
  • Book a private tour – minimum 2 people

On the wilderness ski expedition we will make our own trails according the snow and weather conditions. The remote and open landscape is a popular destination for Easter holidays, but the area is vast and we can find our own peaceful routes. If conditions are good, we will conquer Halti, Finland’s highest peak.

Group departure April 19-25 (It’s almost 24 hour daylight!)

Enhancing experience

On the wilderness ski expeditions we go to remote locations where there is no internet connection, electricity or running water. You have a great opportunity to enhance the daily life through learning new skills and maybe accomplishing a long time dream.

As in all Adventure by Design tours, the aim is to enjoy the nature and outdoors, not push yourself to your physical limits. Our speed is moderate, we take breaks regularly and have time to take photos or just enjoy the arctic landscapes.

Our lead guide Gareth is an experienced professional outdoor instructor, who has lived in the arctic region since 2011. All guides working with us are skilled and trained both in the arctic conditions and your safety.

The wilderness ski expedition starts from Kilpisjärvi.

On the morning of the day 2, we sit down to talk about safety on the tour, skiing technique and camping safety and practices. After lunch, we start the ski tour with a short ski to our first campsite away from the village and and trails. We make the camp and practice the routines of winter camping.

Days 3-5 we ski in the wilderness area, away from any routes. We cross the Norwegian border at least once. The exact route plan will be made closer to the departure and it depends on weather forecast and snow conditions. We return to Kilpisjärvi on the afternoon of the day 5. After a sauna, we have a dinner together at our accommodation.

The terrain is mainly open tundra, so weather conditions can get challenging at times. The route is a moderate difficulty, except for the possible ascent to Halti and descent from the peak; those slopes are steep, but we will take plenty of time for it.

In addition to the professional guiding, the package includes
* 2 nights in shared rooms in Kilpisjärvi with breakfast and buffet dinner
* 4 nights in a expedition tent, 2 people per tent
* breakfast, lunch and dinner included during the tour. We cook it together at the tents using dehydrated ingredients

If you request a privately guided tour for your own group, our minimum is 1 person, maximum 8 people per guide. Custom trips can be planned outside the routes in wintertime, in summer time we stay at the routes to protect the fragile arctic environment. However, if you are looking something truly remote, we know the local routes where there are no crowds. Accommodation in privately guided tours can be in reservation huts or tents.

During our guided hikes and ski tours, you will have time to speak with the guide, learn about the region’s history, culture and nature. They will also be happy to teach you wilderness skills like reading a map and using a compass and share their knowledge about surviving in the arctic conditions. You can even request a wilderness skills course for a private group.

All our guides speak fluent English and have years of experience in the outdoors and formal training as a guide. They also have first aid training.
