Lapland wilderness ski expedition, privately guided tours
We designed our wilderness ski expedition holidays for the more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Highlights of this tour are:
- Ski expedition at one of the last wilderness areas of Europe
- Silence, remoteness and space
- April temperatures are mild
- Ski gear
- Suitable for fit outdoor enthusiasts
- Possibility to rent winter clothing
- Ski lessons available prior the departure
- Combine with Rovaniemi or Tromso city break
You don’t need to have much experience in winter or arctic conditions, but it helps if you have done some cross country skiing before. You can also arrive to Kilpisjärvi a couple of days beforehand and get used to skiing with our instructor.
On the short ski expeditions, we go to remote locations where there is no internet connection, electricity or running water. You have a great opportunity to disconnect of your day-to-day life. We overnight in wilderness log cabins, with varied level of facilities. Those in Finland are more basic, while the Norwegian cabins are rather comfortable.
As in all our tours, the aim is to enjoy the nature and outdoors, not push yourself to your physical limits. Our speed is moderate, we take breaks regularly and have time to take photos or just enjoy the arctic landscapes.
To participate on the Lapland wilderness ski expeditions, you need good fitness level. We provide you with skis and boots, but if you wish to bring your own, check with our guide that they are suitable for the open arctic tundra terrain. You will also need wind and waterproof clothing and a warm sleeping bag. We will send you a full gear list when you sign up for the trip.
Our guide Gareth is an experienced professional outdoor instructor, who has lived in the arctic region since 2011. He will not only guide your way, but also teach you important winter skills.

Conditions allowing, we will ski outside of the route and make our own way from wilderness cabin to another. Once we have conquered Halti, the highest peak of Finland, we return to Kilpisjärvi, again making our own route, but staying at the wilderness cabins along the route. The terrain is mainly open tundra, so weather conditions can get challenging at times. The route is a moderate difficulty, except for the last ascent to Halti and descent from the peak; those slopes are steep, but we will take plenty of time for it.
We overnight in the reservation huts, which are very basic in their facilities.

All our group departure hikes and ski tours are small groups, usually 6 and never more than 8.
If you request a privately guided tour for your own group, our minimum is 1 person, maximum 8 people per guide. Custom trips can be planned outside the routes in wintertime, in summer time we stay at the routes to protect the fragile arctic environment. However, if you are looking something truly remote, we know the local routes where there are no crowds. Accommodation in privately guided tours can be in reservation huts or tents.
During our guided hikes, you will have time to speak with the guide, learn about the region’s history, culture and nature. They will also be happy to teach you wilderness skills like reading a map and using a compass and share their knowledge about surviving in the arctic conditions. You can even request a wilderness skills course for a private group.
All our guides speak fluent English and have years of experience in the outdoors and formal training as a guide. They also have first aid training.
